When a tooth has a cavity that is big enough that it reaches the nerve at the center of the tooth, a filling alone is no longer a viable treatment option. A root canal is the recommended treatment. A root canal is basically a treatment that desensitizes and disinfects a badly decayed tooth. The treatment itself is typically painless and Dr Ladino will provide you with any medications he thinks are necessary to minimize any discomfort you may feel after the procedure is completed.
The vast majority of teeth that receive root canals will require full coverage cosmetic porcelain crowns to protect them from fracturing in the future. Dr Ladino will work with you to determine what treatment option is most appropriate for you.
Not necessarily. A tooth that needs a root canal is typically either very sensitive to hot and cold (and sometimes can even pulse with pain when you’re not eating or drinking anything), or it will feel nothing at all. A healthy tooth is typically mildly sensitive to hot and cold and is for the most part, unnoticeable.
